Joshua Rackstraw

Joshua Rackstraw is the Product Owner of Fenomatch, a platform that uses AI to rank potential donors by their facial resemblance to the recipient (or the recipient's partner). He's also an AI ambassador with an interest in ethics and #TechnologyForGood, and is one of the authors of the Zaragoza Declaration, a treaty on AI principles written earlier this year. In his talk, we'll see how facial matching technology can be used to help provide scientific criteria for donor selection that goes above and beyond the industry-standard phenotypic traits like eye colour and complexion.

Professor Nicolas Bourdel

Professor Nicolas Bourdel

Nicolas Bourdel is a professor of gynecological surgery (CHU of Clermont-Ferrand, France). He received his PhD in computer-assisted surgery. He spent one year as an invited scientist at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD, USA). As a surgeon, he is specialized in advanced laparoscopic procedures (oncology and deep endometriosis). Professor Bourdel has published numerous articles (more than 160 articles referenced in Medline) and made numerous presentations and conferences on minimally invasive surgery, peritoneal environment, quality of life and computer-assisted surgery. He is the founder and CEO of SurgAR (www.surgar-surgery.com), a company dedicated to the development of a software suite for augmented reality for minimally invasive surgery. The technology is mainly based on computer vison, artificial intelligence and deep learning.

Dr. Veronika Magdanz

Dr. Veronika Magdanz

Dr. Veronika Magdanz is a biotechnologist that has been developing sperm-driven and sperm-templated microrobots for over 7 years. She studied Biotechnology at TU Braunschweig and Chemical Engineering at UWaterloo, before pursuing her PhD at IFW Dresden in Oliver Schmidt’s team at the Institute for Integrative Nanosciences. After graduating with summa cum laude from the TU Dresden in 2016, she received funding by the Excellence Initiative of the German Research Foundation (DFG) to pursue further her interests in sperm biology and developing innovative approaches for diagnostics and therapy in reproductive science as Open Topic Postdoc. Currently, she is working as Feodor-Lynen Fellow at IBEC Barcelona in the Smart Nano-Bio-Devices group. Her interests span from sperm motility & metabolism in complex environments to the development of smart microbiorobots. Veronika is a truly interdisciplinary scientist with expertise in nanotechnology, robotics, material science, chemistry and biology. She has coauthored over 30 peer-reviewed articles in high impact journals.
