Session 92: MIGHTY MOLECULES IN REPRODUCTION

Tuesday, 5th April at 3pm EST, 8pm UK, 9pm CET

Moderating:

Dr. Pierre Comizzoli, Professor Marc Antoine Driancourt, Editor in Chief, Theriogenology Journal.

Panelists:

Dr. Alison Bartolucci and Dr. Daniel Le Bourhis

Presenting:

"Extracellular vesicles as non-invasive biomarkers for embryo quality" Professor Islam M. Saadeldin

"The sperm-borne sncRNAs: potential biomarkers of fertility?" Dr. Eli Sellem

"miRNAs in the spent media after blastocyst culture: searching for biomarkers of implantation" Dr. Antonio Capalbo

ISLAM M. SAADELDIN

Islam M. Saadeldin obtained his DVM and master’s degree from Zagazig University, Egypt, and Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University, South Korea. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Seoul National University, a visiting scholar at Niigata University, Japan, and an Associate Professor at King Saud University, Saudi Arabia. Currently, he is a Research Professor at Chungnam National University, South Korea. He has a patent of invention regarding bovine embryo transgenesis through piggybac transposons and he authored more than 160 research papers, reviews, and book chapters covering the fields of advanced reproductive biotechnology such as somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), transgenesis, adult and embryonic stem cells, as well as elucidating the roles of extracellular vesicles in embryo communication and the embryonic-maternal crosstalk. His current research focuses on developing CRISPR/Cas9 engineered extracellular vesicles for improving embryo implantation and pregnancy of cloned and transgenic animals. He has been awarded several national and international prizes, such as the Egyptian State Prize, Shoman Prize, Almarai Prize, Misr Elkheir prize, The Interstellar Initiative for young investigators, the International Embryo Technology Society (IETS) Early Career Achievement Award, and AUA Scholar Award.

DR.  ELI SELLEM

Eli Sellem is working for 21 years at Allice on bull fertility issues. He handles different issues regarding all the male aspects, as develop right condition for young age production, puberty, production level, semen quality…but his final goal is to find a fertility predictor. He firstly focused on semen functionality tests before to explore since the last 8 years with INRAE teams (MECP²) the semen epigenetics: DNA methylation, post translational modifications of protamine and more specifically the small non-coding RNAs.

PROF.  ANTONIO CAPALBO

Antonio Capalbo, Ph.D., is Genomics Research Director Igenomix.
Dr. Capalbo received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biotechnology from University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’ and his Ph.D. magna cum laude in Human Genetics at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart of Rome in 2011. From 2008 to 2012 Dr. Capalbo has been working as clinical embryologist, pioneering human embryo biopsy technologies and applications. Since then, his research has focused on preimplantation genetic testing and on the development of novel molecular biology techniques to improve pregnancy and take-home baby rates in ART. His basic research has been focused on the mechanisms of aneuploidies in oocytes and preimplantation human embryos. He received several grants for innovative studies on these subjects. From 2012-2017 he was co-founder and Laboratory Director at GENETYX, largest PGT program in Italy. From 2017 he is working Genomics Research Director at Igenomix, and as laboratory director for Igenomix Italy. He is currently senior deputy of the ESHRE SIG in Reproductive Genetics and member of the genomics-working group of the Italian society of human genetics. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and is reviewer for many journals in the field of reproductive biology and genetics.

DR. PIERRE COMIZZOLI

Pierre Comizzoli started his career more than 25 years ago as a research veterinarian South America and Africa. He then completed a PhD in 2000 on in vitro fertilization in bovine and deer species. In 2002, he joined the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, DC to develop new cryo-banking projects on gametes and gonadal tissues from rare and endangered species. This also includes the coordination of reproductive monitoring and artificial inseminations in different species (including giant pandas, clouded leopards, or Eld’s deer). He is leading since 2007 a Smithsonian-wide initiative to improve the management and use of frozen biomaterial collections within the Institution.

DR. ALISON BARTOLUCCI

Alison is the Director of Laboratory Operations at the Center for Advanced Reproductive Services at the University of Connecticut. Prior to becoming a “UCONN Husky” in 2012, she started her embryology career in 1999 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and then at Fertility Centers of New England in Reading, MA. Alison obtained a Master’s of Science degree in Clinical Embryology and Andrology from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2005 and returned to EVMS almost 15 years later where she received her PhD in Clinical Reproductive Sciences in November 2019. Under the mentorship of some of the “greats” in our field, Alison has acquired a distinct interest for oocyte and somatic cell communication, embryo morphology, and optimizing quality in the clinical IVF lab.
Alison is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the New England Fertility Society and served on the SART executive council as the SRBT laboratory representative from 2014-2017. She has been an invited speaker at multiple conferences across the country, presenting on topics involved in improving laboratory outcomes and strategies for monitoring key performance indicators in the laboratory. She has first and co-authored multiple peer reviewed articles on embryo morphology predictors of embryo potential and most recently published work performed for her thesis on microRNA-21 in human cumulus cells.

DR. DANIEL LE BOURHIS

Dr. Daniel Le is responsible of the IVP lab of Allice in Nouzilly, France. After a technician degree, he gained a 30-year expertise in embryo production and handling, including IVP, embryo biopsy, embryo sexing, genotyping and cloning. He is in charge of implementing and managing several projects dedicated to IVP optimization and embryo quality prediction. He is the author or co-author of 30 peer review publications and 16 communications (H factor =12). He is also involved in networking with IVP lab managers in France.
